History:
The USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) is the first in a new class of US Navy aircraft carriers, representing a significant leap forward in naval technology and capability. Commissioned in 2017, the Gerald R. Ford features numerous advancements over the preceding Nimitz-class, including the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) for more efficient and less stressful aircraft launches, and the Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG) for improved recovery of a wider range of aircraft. The ship also boasts a redesigned flight deck to increase sortie rates, enhanced radar and sensor systems, and a reduced crew requirement due to increased automation. With a displacement of approximately 100,000 tons and a length of 1,106 feet (337 meters), the Gerald R. Ford is the largest aircraft carrier ever built. Its air wing includes the latest generation of aircraft such as the F-35C Lightning II, E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, and unmanned systems like the MQ-25 Stingray. The Gerald R. Ford class is planned to include ten ships, gradually replacing the Nimitz-class carriers and serving as the backbone of the US Navys carrier strike groups well into the mid-21st century.
